Set appropriate expectations
It's important that you have the right expectations regarding your hearing aids. Hearing aids will give you better hearing, but they are not a cure for hearing loss. People whose expectations are too high are likely to be disappointed and may give up. Hearing aid are designed to give amplification at soft sounds and reduce amplification at loud sounds, they can not replace the damage from being exposed to noise for a long period of time.

Hearing aids can:

  • Help you hear and understand better in most situations
  • Allow you to participate more in group situations and meetings

Be patient
Unlike eyeglasses, which correct vision as soon as you put them on, hearing aids need time for proper adjustment. It may take some time to completely adjust to your hearing aids, so be persistence and patient. When wearing hearing aids for the first time, it is important to start the re-training process in single speaker situations and then build to more complex listening situations as you start adjusting to the new sounds. Don't wear them on your first day to a group meeting and expect to hear and understand everybody. Good things that time.
