Hearing Loss

Good hearing is a basic need
Hearing and speaking are essential to communication. Hearing deficiencies are commonly experienced after the age of 50 and are caused by presbyacusis, or the ageing of the hearing organ. Hearing loss can also result from damage caused by extreme levels of noise, head injuries, brain damage, circulatory problems, or repeated ear infections and genetic diseases.

The symptoms
Poor hearing is characterised by difficulty in understanding: in group situations or in restaurants, in a crowded street, on the telephone or watching television.

The results
Hearing difficulties cause changes in behaviour, and people experiencing them tend to isolate themselves and avoid group situations, as their friends and family grow tired of repeating themselves. People with hearing difficulties often feel obliged to make more of an effort in company and experience increased tiredness and fatigue as a result.
